HDMI Question and Answer

Q. What is Hdmi?

A. HDMI stands for High-definition Multimedia Interface. It is an all-digital audio/video interface.

Q. What is the difference between our three categories of HDMI cables?

A. For sake of clarity we will call them Standard Quality, High Quality, and Commercial Grade. The
Standard Quality is a basic cable that works well for most applications. It may or may not reach 1080P on all systems and equipment does vary a lot when it comes to HDMI.
High Quality Cobra HDMI uses a heavier wire gauge (26 compared to 28). It has a rugged Nylon braiding as well as a rugged strain relief system.
Commercial Grade HDMI Cables use metal head shells for more shielding, are built for in-wall usage, and have a LifeTime Warranty. It is the most likely cable to be capable of 1080P performance and HDMI version 1.3.

Q. What is HDCP?

A. HDCP stands for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection. It is a technology embraced by the Motion Picture Association of America that eliminates the reproduction of copyrighted material.

Q. What is AWG?

A. AWG stands for American wire gauge. It is the standard for wire sizes. The smaller the number the larger the wire thus, 24 gauge is larger than 28 gauge.

Q. What is the CL2 and CL3 in wall rating?

A. These are National Electrical code ratings. CL2 has a voltage rating of not less than 150 volts. CL3 has a voltage rating of not less than 300 volts. Local building codes might require one or the other to be used in your area. Either rating is for residential usage; either type is resistant to the spread of fire.

Q. What is HDMI 1.3?

A. The 1.3 standard is the newest standard for HDMI. It has more to do with the transmission and reception of the signal rather than cable type. The new standard is only found on a few pieces of equipment currently available. It offers a higher bandwidth for the video signal and the capability of billions of colors.

Q. What is 1080P and 1080I?

A. 1080 is the number of lines of vertical resolution in an hdtv signal. It is actually 1920x1080. The P stands for progressive scan meaning it scans the picture only once. The I stands for interlaced. Every other line is scanned so it takes two passes to produce a television picture.

Q. What should I look for in a cable 25 feet long or longer?

A. For such a cable it is best to look for a larger gauge wire or some form of signal amplifier.

Q. What is an HDMI type A and type C connector?

A. The standard HDMI cable uses a type “A” connector. Most cables sold are A to A. The type “C” connector is a miniature “A” and is used on camcorders and digital still cameras.
