This 23AWG Cat 6 Plenum Wire, 2' Blue, and all of our other Cat6 Plenum cables are rated for use in Plenum spaces, unlike Riser cables (sometimes referred to as cable Risers) and other standard patch cables. This is because this Cat6 Plenum cable is made with a Plenum jacket whereas a non Plenum Cat6 cable is made with materials such as Polyvinyl Chloride (often abbreviated as PVC). If it were to catch on fire, the smoke emitted from PVC can be harmful. While it is not usually a major concern, a data cable in Plenum areas such as air ducts needs to be made out of safer materials or it could circulate harmful smoke throughout a building in the event of a fire.
While we would recommend a Cat6 Ethernet cable for most networks, some networks may not need as reliable of speeds for their cables. In this case, we also carry a full line of Cat5e Plenum rated cables which you can view here. Finally, while a shielded cable can minimize the effects of electromagnetic interference, it is not often required in Plenum spaces. With that being said, we also carry bulk 1000 ft STP plenum in both CAT 5 and CAT 6.
