Thanks to a larger core size multimode fiber optic cable have the ability to carry multiple modes (hint the name) of light which in turn allows it to carry more data than singlemode which is best used for longer runs. So while Multimode fiber is not the best for long runs it is ideal for most applications. Multimode fiber is typically 50/125 (OM2, OM3 and OM4 Fiber) or and 62.5/125 (The original OM1 Fiber). What this means is that the fiber core itself is smaller (50 microns) which is then wrapped with a protective outer cladding which is 125 microns in diameter. It is then wrapped again in a plastic jacket to protect the actual fiberglass inside, this typically gives multimode cable, or zipcord as it’s often called, an overall diameter of 3.0mm. Due to the technology of multimode fiber the hardware on each ends tends to be less expensive which is a plus and makes it quite popular.
